History lesson: “Chinese seethe over Freeway.”

via The History of Metropolitan Vancouver:

October 16 A headline in The Vancouver Sun reads: “Chinese seethe over Freeway.” This was in reference to the anger in the city’s Strathcona neighborhood over plans to run a freeway through the area—many of the residents were Chinese who had lived there for decades. Wrote Taras Grescoe in The Greater Vancouver Book: “A San Francisco-based firm concluded that a waterfront freeway would best be served by levelling 600 houses in Strathcona and laying a ten-metre-high overpass over Carrall Street, in the centre of Chinatown. Immediately, protest came from every part of the city, and a crowd of 800 people gathered in City Hall to shout down the consultants’ proposals. The Chairman of the city’s planning commission resigned on the spot, and a year later, the plan was scrapped. Apparently, the spirited editorializing of the local papers in favor of cutting out civic blight with a concrete knife had influenced no one but a handful of architects.”

John Atkin, author of a book on Strathcona, has commented: “It was because of its mixture of housing and industry and the fact that it was the entry point to the city for successive waves of immigrants, that the East End name came to have a derogatory meaning. By the 1950s planners had declared it a slum for demolition, despite evidence to the contrary. By 1967, despite protests, fifteen blocks of the neighborhood had already been acquired and cleared for urban redevelopment when the city announced a freeway to downtown. Strathcona residents were horrified by plans to use the blocks in between Union and Prior for the freeway, connected via a new Georgia Viaduct to the larger network of roads that were to carve up the downtown. The outcry from the general public, community activists and professionals was loud and clear about the lack of public consultation and the amount of destruction the new roads would cause. In the end the Georgia and Dunsmuir street viaducts were the only pieces of the system to be constructed …”

Free transit for all in Vancouver

via Stephen Hui for the Georgia Straight

While most of us have been coerced into paying for rides on what should be a free, taxpayer-funded service by experiences with TransLink fare checks and the threat of $173 fines, we seemingly needn’t have worried.

CBC News and CKNW have confirmed the consequences of not paying said fines, and the answer? There is none.

Apparently, ICBC handles the collection of fines, and the provincial auto insurer doesn’t do anything to enforce payment. With a stack of 100 tickets, you can still renew your driver’s licence and no sketchy collection agency will be called.

Paris is to become one of the first major capital cities in the world to officially allow cyclists to ride through red lights, via dailymail.co.uk:
- Cyclists will be allowed to turn right or go straight ahead, even when a traffic light is on red
- But they will have to give way to pedestrians, and traffic coming from the left
- They will be held responsible if there is an accident
You can be sure that municipalities all around the world will be watching and waiting to see whether this experiment is successful and should be adopted as they craft more evolved transportation policies that reflect higher rates of cyclists on increasingly cycling-friendly roads.

It’s Time for Americans to Chill Out About Gas Prices
A better strategy than wishing for lower prices and believing politicians who promise to magically make them lower would be to take actions that will break the link between gas and transportation.

City of Vancouver launches new “People Are Fragile” campaign to bring awareness around tuned-out street behaviour, via Stephen Hui at the Georgia Straight, who writes:

If you want to see reporters ask a series of stupid questions, attend a news conference having something to do with cyclists or bike lanes.

ha, totally…

Called “People Are Fragile”, the campaign aims to counteract three “common yet inconsiderate, risky and illegal behaviours” on the road: jaywalking by pedestrians, and cyclists running stop signs, and drivers failing to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. According to VPD stats, 60 pedestrians, 19 drivers, 12 motorcyclists, 11 motor-vehicle passengers, and five cyclists were killed in collisions from 2006 to 2011.
So, what’s the city, VPD, and ICBC’s latest solution? Transit ads, sidewalk messages, and a website.

This gal lived the hobo life, hopping trains across the US and Canada, and then she made a zine about it…

Nearly ten years of freight hopping field recordings and rail songs I made while riding trains across the USA and Canada, dubbed off of old mini-disc tapes and Zoom H2 flash sticks, and lovingly collected on one limited edition CD. The audio veers between spooky post-industrial ambiance and death metal. Ear plugs not included.
The fanzine includes 72 pages of train hopping stories interspersed with journal entries, retrospective flashbacks, photo fold-outs and vintage train maps. Stories about my first ride alone, journeys across the not-so-wild west, and what happens when you have $700 stuffed in your pants and you are tired and alone in the middle of Montana.

Of Greyhound blood baths and peculiar characters

I was just G-chatting with a friend about my trip to Indiana from Vancouver, which I’d chosen to do by Greyhound. Given our conversation, I may consider taking the train back…

Anders:  buss?

me:  yeah i took it here. not so bad

Anders:  how long?

me:  as long as you cook all your own food in advance2 days 12 hours

Anders:  thats a lot faster than i thought

me:  it’s really hard on the knees thobut good for people watching

Anders:  i bet. did you meat anyone interesting?

me:  yeah, well, not exactly “meet” (or meat :) but talked to, eavesdroped on, speculated about… you know

Anders:  ha!

me:  it’s not like you’re making lasting friendshipsbut it’s a great way to get back to my working class american rootsplus, lots of recently released ex-cons

Anders:  you never know. love could be sitting in row 6 with a sniffly nose and throwing star collection

me:  wearing grey sweatsuits and orange canvas slip on shoes, carrying paper bags

Anders:  picture perfect

me:  haha, throwing star collection… be still my hearttho be careful what you say. did you hear about the decapitation a couple years ago on the greyhound in alberta?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Tim_McLean

Anders:  my friend took a grey hound across the South West. but they had to stop in Arizona because a guy stabbed a random lady in the face. they were in teh middle of nowhere and by teh time the ambulance arrived she was dead and there was blood all over the entire back of the bus. Grey hound couldn’t get a new bus to them and it was over 100 degrees so everyone got back in and sat in teh blood for  another 100 miles

me:  holy shit
